Biography

esantos I don't necessarily fit the profile of the avid nature photographer. My background is in business and government finance. But that doesn't mean I have studied the craft any less intently than any other obsessed and dedicated outdoor shooter. I've read many of the classic books on photography, studied the works of many masters, and I have a deep interest in the places I visit and photograph. I think this foundation has served me well in my attempts to communicate my own vision.

I took up photography again about eight years ago after two decades of having my camera collect dust in the closet. Within a couple of years I was shooting with my first digital camera and it was a revelation to me. I could not appreciate more the fact that the ability to immediately see the results of my compositional and exposure decisions gave me a huge advantage. Soon I felt my images quickly gained a sizeable degree of quality.

In my second affair with the camera I have been priviledged to have gained substantial recognition for my work. I am a past winner of The Windland Smith Rice International Nature's Best Photography Awards and an honorable mention in the National Parks Foundation Photo Contest. I regularly contribute to several websites including Singh-Ray Filters blog "Focus on Singh-Ray Filters" and "Nikonians" where I write articles and product reviews. I am also a moderator of their forums and a member of the Nikonians Master's Society. Recently, I have been published in Australia through Copper Leife publishing services and with the National Geographic Society in their National Geographic Traveler Magazine.

About my equipment...

I shoot exclusively with Nikon® digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras and Nikkor (Nikon) lenses. This is my personal preference and nothing should be inferred by this decision. I am frequently asked by people what cameras I use. Of all the responses I have given it can all be summed up to this. It is, of course, just a tool and no particular make or model is the mark of a great photograph or photographer. Certainly, better equipment gives you more options in varying shooting conditions. But in the end it is more important to understand fully how to use your camera and to recognize the optical properties of your lens when presented with a particular situation regarding the light, the atmosphere, your vision, and what you want to communicate to the viewer.
